  4.     Until last week it seemed nothing short of a miracle would
  5. enable a Democrat to win a state senate seat from San Diego's
  6. heavily Republican 39th District. But that was before Roman
  7. Catholic Bishop Leo Maher ordered that Democratic candidate Lucy
  8. Killea, 67, be refused Communion because of her pro-choice views
  9. on abortion. Though Maher declared that his action was "more
  10. pastoral than political," it quickly became the most important
  11. issue in the campaign. Riled by the bishop's intervention, voters
  12. gave Killea a 51%-to-49% upset victory over state legislator Carol
  13. Bentley in a special election.

  15.     Declared Kate Michelman, executive director of the National
  16. Abortion Rights Action League: "The bishop shot himself in the
  17. foot."
